Finding Your Way Back to the Simple Joys of Life

Serve the Tea Please!

There are seasons when life becomes so full that we forget how to notice the simple joys of life. Work deadlines, family responsibilities, business decisions, appointments, errands, and endless to-do lists can quietly pull us away from the things that once brought us peace. Before long, we may find ourselves moving through the days without pausing long enough to enjoy them. Thankfully, even when life feels busy and unfamiliar, we can always begin finding our way back to the simple joys of life, one gentle moment at a time.

Perhaps you have spent the last few months pouring yourself into your career. Maybe you have cared for children, supported your family, built a business, managed a home, or carried responsibilities that no one else fully sees. Or perhaps like me you are in a season of helping your children navigate young adulthood. Somehow, even though you have been through it yourself you want to be extra intentional about what advice you give. After all, these are your babies! And it’s exhausting in the most beautiful way!

Maybe you simply needed a break from creating, sharing, planning, and showing up.

Whatever your season looks like, you do not have to rush your way back.

You can return slowly.

You can begin with a warm cup of tea, an open window, a quiet prayer, or a few peaceful minutes before the day begins. And you can make room for the simple moments again without expecting yourself to transform your entire life overnight.

The simple joys of life often wait patiently for us.

Why We Sometimes Lose Touch With the Simple Joys of Life

We aren’t always pulled away from simple joys of life through one major event. Sometimes, the distance happens gradually.

One busy week becomes several. A demanding project turns into a demanding season. A child needs extra attention. A business requires more energy than expected. A household responsibility takes priority. Even rest begins to feel like another task we need to schedule.

Eventually, we may stop asking ourselves what brings us joy. Instead, we focus only on what needs our attention next.

For a corporate woman, this might look like answering emails before enjoying breakfast or carrying workplace concerns into the evening. For a stay-at-home mom, it might mean caring for everyone else while placing her own needs at the very bottom of the list. For an entrepreneur, it might mean working through meals, postponing rest, and feeling guilty whenever she steps away from her goals. Interesting enough, it just dawned on me while typing this, that I have been in all of these spaces at various seasons of my life. I am sure many women can say the same.

Although these experiences look different, they share something familiar; life becomes centered on output rather than presence. We begin solely measuring our days by what we accomplish instead of what we notice, experience, or appreciate. Yet joy does not always require more time, more money, or fewer responsibilities. Often, simple joy begins when we become present, intentionally, within the life we already have.

The Simple Joys of Life Do Not Have to Be Complicated

We often imagine that joy requires a special occasion. We picture a vacation, a beautifully decorated home, a quiet weekend get away, or a large purchase that promises a fresh beginning. Those experiences can certainly bring happiness. However, the simple joys of life often live much closer to us. And if you’re not intentional, you can miss these priceless moments.

These simple joys may look like, sitting in the sunlight for a few quiet minutes or listening to a song that lifts your spirit. The simple joys of laughing with your children over something silly or reading a few pages of a meaningful book. It could be taking a slow walk without checking your phone, preparing a comforting meal, writing your thoughts in a journal or simply taking a deep breath before beginning the next task. And my personal favorite, sipping tea from your favorite mug.

These moments may appear ordinary, but ordinary does not mean insignificant. In fact, the ordinary moments often hold the kind of beauty we remember most. A child’s unexpected hug, the smell of a favorite candle, or the quiet comfort of clean sheets can bring us back to ourselves.

When we stop waiting for life to become perfect, we create space to enjoy the life that is already unfolding.

Finding Joy in Your Current Season

Sometimes, we struggle to enjoy the present because we keep comparing it with another season. We remember when life felt lighter. We think about what we used to do, how much free time we once had, or how easily we seemed to make some decisions. While those memories may offer comfort, they can also make the present feel disappointing.

Instead of asking, “Why can’t life feel the way it used to?” try asking, “What brings me joy right now, in this season?” That question invites you to pause and creates room for grace.

If you work long hours, perhaps your joy belongs in the first ten minutes of your morning or the quiet space after dinner. If you care for young children, perhaps joy looks like enjoying a snack together, playing outside, or taking a few moments for yourself while they rest. If you run a business, perhaps joy means protecting one evening each week from work-related tasks.

Your current season may not allow the same routines you once enjoyed. That does not mean joy has disappeared. It may simply need a new place to grow. Rather than forcing your old rhythm into your present circumstances, create a gentler rhythm that supports the life you live today. Create a rhythm that magnifies the simple joys of life.

Create Small Joyful Anchors Throughout Your Day

When life feels overwhelming, large changes may seem impossible. Instead, begin with small joyful anchors. A joyful anchor is a simple activity that helps you reconnect with peace, gratitude, or delight. It gives your day a few familiar moments to look forward to.

For example, you might begin the morning with a short prayer. Take a short walk after lunch or send an encouraging message to a friend. Spend ten minutes reading before bed or play with your children without multitasking. Here are a few other joyful anchors to help lead you back:

Return to the People and Places That Bring You Joy

Sometimes, finding your way back to the simple joys of life means reconnecting with people or places that help you feel like yourself.

Perhaps you have not called a close friend in months. Maybe you’ve stopped visiting a favorite park, attending church, spending time in your garden, or sitting in a particular corner of your home.

Consider what once helped you feel grounded. Who makes you laugh without effort? Where do you feel peaceful? What activities help you remember the person beyond your responsibilities? You may not have the same amount of time you once had, but you can still create small opportunities for connection.

Call someone while taking a walk. Invite a friend for tea. Sit outside with your children and make it a teatime. Visit a peaceful place on the weekend. Share a meal without rushing through the conversation.

We were not created to thrive or struggle in isolation; and this coming from a self-proclaimed introvert. Joy often grows through connection, and sometimes we need another person to remind us that life contains more than what currently feels difficult.

Practice Gentle Gratitude for the Simple Joys of Life

Gratitude does not require us to ignore pain, exhaustion, or disappointment. Instead, gratitude helps us notice that difficulty does not occupy every corner of our lives.

You can acknowledge that you feel tired while also appreciating the quiet of your home. You can admit that work feels demanding while still enjoying a meaningful conversation with a colleague. You can recognize the challenges of motherhood while cherishing your child’s laughter.

Both realities can exist together. Try ending each day by journaling three simple joys:

  • Something you observed
  • Something you gave
  • Something you received

Your list might include an encouraging call from your mom, a kind message from or to a friend, a productive meeting, a peaceful moment, or a hug to or from your child.

Over time, this practice trains your attention toward the simple joys that often hides inside ordinary days. You may discover that joy did not vanish during your busy season. You simply needed to slow down enough to recognize it again.

Rediscover the Simple Joys of Life Through Your Senses

Busyness often disconnects us from our senses. We move quickly from one responsibility to another without noticing the world around us. However, our senses can gently lead us back into the present. When you engage your senses, you give your mind a place to rest.

Notice the scent of your soap as you wash your hands. Pay attention to the texture of your favorite blanket. Listen to the sound of rain against the window. Notice the taste of fresh fruit in your mouth. In the morning open the curtains and notice the sunlight or the warmth of soup on a cold afternoon. In the evening dim the lights, make tea, or play soft music.

These actions may take only a few minutes, but they can change the way you experience your day. The simple joys of life often become visible when we stop moving past them.

Give Yourself Permission to Enjoy Something Without Being Productive

Many women struggle to enjoy activities that do not produce a measurable result. We may feel that we should read something useful, clean while listening to music, exercise while watching television, or turn every creative interest into a business opportunity.

I discovered I had this challenge with my parenting. Everything turned into a life lesson, a teachable moment for my children. The truth is, not everything needed to be pointed out, spoken out loud or corrected. I didn’t realize it until it was bought to my attention and I am still to this day working on that.

Although productivity has its place, joy does not always need to serve a purpose.

You can enjoy a flower because it is beautiful. You can read a novel because the story comforts you. You can bake because you like the smell of something sweet in the oven. You can sit quietly because your heart needs a moment without demands. You don’t have to justify every peaceful moment.

Rest does not become more valuable because it helps you work harder afterward. Joy does not need to earn its place in your schedule. Sometimes, the most intentional thing you can do is enjoy something simply because it brings light into your day.

Let Tea Become a Small Invitation to Slow Down

There is something special about preparing tea when life feels hurried.

The kettle begins to warm. The water moves toward a gentle boil. The tea leaves release their fragrance, their essence. Steam rises from the cup, and for a few moments, you have a reason to pause.

Tea does not solve every problem. It does not remove responsibilities or make difficult decisions disappear. Still, it can offer a small and meaningful transition between rushing and resting. You can turn an ordinary cup of tea into a simple routine by giving yourself permission to enjoy it.

Choose a favorite blend. Use a cup that makes you smile. Sit somewhere comfortable, even if you only have five minutes. Notice the warmth in your hands. Take a slow breath before reaching for your phone.

You do not need a perfect tea corner or an elaborate routine. You only need a willingness to become present. A reminder that your life contains more than tasks waiting for completion.

You Are Allowed to Begin Again

Finding your way back to the simple joys of life does not necessarily mean returning to an earlier version of yourself.

You have grown and learned. You have carried responsibilities, experienced change, and moved through seasons that shaped you. You are evolving! Therefore, your return may look different this time.

You may need more rest than before. You may value quiet more deeply. You may choose fewer commitments and you may want to protect your mornings, simplify your home, reconnect with your faith, or spend more time with the people you love.

Let that be enough.

You don’t need to make a dramatic announcement or have a perfect plan. You can begin privately, gently, honestly. You must begin intentionally!

Start with one cup of tea. Take one peaceful walk. Write three lines in your journal. Say one heartfelt prayer. Notice one beautiful thing.

Then, tomorrow, begin again.

Final Sip: A Gentle Invitation to Return to Intentional Living

Life will always bring responsibilities. There will be deadlines, dishes, meetings, school runs, business decisions, bills, appointments, and unexpected changes.

Intentional living does not mean creating a life without responsibilities. Instead, it means learning to remain present and connected while you move through them. Remembering that you are a person, not a machine.

You are allowed to enjoy the sunlight while answering emails. You are allowed to laugh during a demanding week. You are allowed to make tea before beginning another task. You are allowed to pause without explaining why.

The simple joys of life may not change your circumstances immediately, but they can change the way you meet them. They can soften the edges of a difficult day and they can remind you of what matters; returning to gratitude, peace, connection, and wonder.

So, if life has carried you away from yourself for a little while, welcome back. There is no need to hurry!

The quiet moments are still here. The small pleasures are still waiting. The beauty of ordinary life has not moved on without you.

Take a breath. Make yourself a cup of tea. Look around and notice what is good. Then take one gentle step toward the simple joys of life.

You may find that the way back begins with something wonderfully small.
